When to DIY and When to Hire a Plumbing Professional

August 26, 2021

When it comes to plumbing work at home like a minor leak or a faucet tap being replaced, some homeowners decide to do it themselves. Most people have the necessary skills in plumbing and fixing home appliances to be able to do small jobs themselves. And having these skills is very practical in the sense it saves them the expenses of hiring a plumber or waiting for the job to be done.

But sometimes, DIY plumbing just won’t cut it. There are some fixes and repairs you’re not well-versed to handle and should probably leave to someone that knows what they're doing. If you’re not familiar with the work that needs to be done and how to do it, you might end up causing even more damage. It's occasions that this that make calling a plumbing professional a necessity.

Professional plumbers have the right qualifications and licenses to get the job done properly. A licensed plumber is someone skilled enough to fix problems way beyond small leaks and slight fixes here and there.

Keep reading to understand when you can do the work yourself and when you have to hire a professional plumber.

WHEN TO DIY

Some plumbing work is easy enough to do on your own. You don’t need a professional plumber if the problem is not too serious. Simple tasks like unclogging the toilet, fixing a leaking tap in the kitchen, or installing a new shower head are things that can be done with the help of a couple YouTube tutorials or the instruction manual that comes with the product.

WHEN TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL PLUMBER

For the more complicated plumbing jobs that come up in the home,  have a professional plumber fix them. Even if you think you know what the problem is and how to fix it, the issue may be more complex than you think. So it’s best to get help from a professional plumber who’s more knowledgeable and skilled to take on the task in hand.

Jobs that require a plumbing professional:

  • Turning off the water supply: Drainage problems often require shutting off the water supply to prevent leakage or bursting. Most people know how to fix simple jobs like unclogging the sink and other small repairs that require little fixtures but if it involves a large water source, leave it to a professional.
  • Renovations: If you’re undergoing renovations for your home and find yourself needing to move around some pipes or expand your plumbing system into the extension you've got, you need a professional to help. These kinds of jobs involve removing and reinstalling some rather important parts, which need to be done correctly. Professional equipment like pipe cutters and hacksaws will also be essential, and only a professional would know how to use them. Also, it's important to know that some equipment will require licenses before they can be used, which a professional has.
  • External plumbing works: This is the plumbing outside your home. Sometimes, the problem is not on your end but stems from the underground major city lines. Only a professional will be able to identify this. And with an issue this serious, it might involve other houses as well. Needless to say, jobs like this are completely out of your skillset and need handling by professionals.
