Plumbing issues can strike at any time, often catching us off guard and leaving us with a mess to deal with. From leaky taps and running toilets, to burst pipes, these problems can range from minor inconveniences to major emergencies. As a plumber with years of experience, we've encountered a multitude of questions from homeowners and landlords about their plumbing systems.

Below are 10 of the most common plumbing questions and answers to help you better understand your plumbing system. Should you ever find yourself in a plumbing predicament, don't hesitate to contact Assett Plumbing for all your plumbing needs, including emergencies and boiler servicing.

1. How Can I Unclog a Drain?

Clogged drains are a common plumbing problem, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. They are often caused by a buildup of grease, hair, soap scum, or other debris. To prevent clogs, avoid putting grease or food scraps down the drain, and use a drain strainer to catch hair and other debris. To clear a minor clog, you can try using a plunger or drain unclogging solution from your local supermarket. If the clog persists, it's best to call a professional plumber to avoid causing further damage to your pipes.

2. Why does my toilet keep running?

A running toilet is often caused by a faulty fill valve. The valve is a rubber seal that sits at the bottom of the toilet tank and prevents water from flowing into the bowl until you flush. If the valve is not sealing properly, water will continuously leak into the bowl, causing the toilet to run. Replacing this valve can often solve the problem. If not, it might be a more complex issue with the toilet's flush mechanism that requires professional attention.

3. Why do we run out of hot water so quickly?

There are a few reasons why you might be running out of hot water quickly. One possibility is that your water heater is not large enough for your household's needs. Another possibility is that there is a problem with the heating element in your water heater, or the boiler itself, depending on the type of heating system you have. If you are consistently running out of hot water, it is best to call a plumber to diagnose the problem.

4. Where is the water shut-off valve or tap?

There is usually a water shut off tap downstairs, in modern houses these tend to be under the kitchen sink, but on older properties the location can vary. There will usually also be a mains water shut-off valve is usually located near the perimeter of your house, below the ground level, often at the front of the house, or along the street under a small cover. It is important to know where the water shut-off tap is located in case you need to quickly shut off the water supply to your house in an emergency.

5. How can I prevent my pipes from freezing?

To prevent your pipes from freezing, make sure that they are properly insulated. You can also let a tap drip slowly during cold weather to keep water flowing through the pipes. If you are going to be away from home for an extended period of time during the winter, you should shut off the water supply to your house and drain the pipes.

6. What is the difference between hard water and soft water?

Hard water contains high levels of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals can cause a buildup of scale on pipes and fixtures, and can also make it difficult to lather soap. Soft water has been treated to remove these minerals. You can have a water softener fitted to your water inlet reducing the hardness of water throughout the premises, or only to selected pipes.

7. What should I do if I have a water leak?

If you have a water leak, the first thing you should do is shut off the water supply to your house. Then, call a plumber to repair the leak.

8. Can I Fix a Leaky Pipe Myself?

Fixing a leaky pipe depends on the severity of the leak. Small, slow leaks may be temporarily patched with pipe tape or a repair clamp. However these types of repairs will only last a short while, so for these and for more substantial leaks or burst pipes, it's highly recommended to turn off the water supply and contact a professional plumber. Ignoring a major leak can lead to extensive water damage and costly repairs.

9. What Causes a Boiler to Malfunction?

Common issues with boilers and water heaters include not heating water, making strange noises, or leaking. Problems can be caused by sediment build-up, a faulty heating element, or a damaged pressure relief valve. Routine boiler servicing and professional inspections can help prevent such issues and prolong the life of your water heater. And power flushing can really help to remove sludge and sediment from radiators and pipes therefore preventing them from making their way into the boiler and causing more damage.

10. What Should I Do in a Plumbing Emergency?

Plumbing emergencies, such as burst pipes or major leaks, can cause significant damage to your property if not addressed promptly. In such situations, the first step is to shut off the water supply to the affected area or the entire house. Then, call a professional emergency plumber immediately to assess the situation and provide emergency repairs.
